Which Obesity Treatment Is Most Successful?

Severely obese patients who have lost significant amounts of weight by changing their diet and exercise habits may be as successful in keeping the weight off long-term as those individuals who lost weight after bariatric surgery, according to a new study published online by the International Journal of Obesity.

While weight loss and maintenance were comparable between the two treatments, patients who relied on non-surgical methods had to work harder over a longer duration to maintain their weight losses, say researchers from The Miriam Hospital’s Centers for Behavioral and Preventive Medicine.

“Our findings suggest that its possible to maintain large weight losses … Continue Reading

Fat kids found to have arteries of 45-year-olds!

Obese children as young as 10 had the arteries of 45-year-olds and other heart abnormalities that greatly raise their risk of heart disease, say doctors who used ultrasound tests to take a peek inside.

“As the old saying goes, you’re as old as your arteries are,” said Dr. Geetha Raghuveer of Children’s Hospital in Kansas City, who led one of the studies. “This is a wake-up call.”

The studies were reported Tuesday at an American Heart Association conference.

  • About a third of American children are overweight and one-fifth are obese.
  • Many parents think that “baby fat” … Continue Reading

Banning fast food TV ads could dent Obesity.

A little less “I’m Lovin’ It” could put a significant dent in the problem of childhood obesity, suggests a new study that attempts to measure the effect of TV fast-food ads.

A ban on such commercials would reduce the number of obese young children by 18 percent, and the number of obese older kids by 14 percent, researchers found.

They also suggested that ending an advertising expense tax deduction for fast-food restaurants could mean a slight reduction in childhood obesity.

Some experts say it’s the first national study to show fast-food TV commercials have such a large effect … Continue Reading

American missing exercise goals!

Many Americans are failing to meet the minimum recommendations for exercise, although confusing guidelines are making it difficult to assess, researchers reported on Thursday.

Depending on which federal exercise recommendations are used, either about half or about two-thirds of Americans meet minimum goals, the team at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found.

“Additional efforts are needed to further increase physical activity,” they concluded in the CDC’s weekly report on death and disease.

“Approximately one third of U.S. adults did not report meeting minimum levels of aerobic physical … Continue Reading

Exercise Eases Obesity and Anger in Kids

Overweight kids may be able to work out their anger with exercise, a new report finds.

  • A study of sedentary but otherwise healthy 7- to 11-year-olds found they reduced both their weight and anger issues by taking part in a 10- to 15-week after-school aerobic exercise program.
  • The finding applied to children across lines such as race, gender and socioeconomic status, as well as regardless of how fit or overweight the kids were.
